He belonged to the Shakya clan, and his birthplace, Lumbini, is located in present-day Nepal. In his search for a way to transcend suffering, he renounced his privileged life. According to Buddhist tradition, he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya. His teachings emphasize wisdom, compassion, and the mindful cultivation of one’s thoughts and actions.

Symbolism of the Depiction

His right hand touches the earth—a gesture known as the *bhumisparsha mudra*—recalling the moment of his enlightenment and his act of calling upon the earth to bear witness. His left hand rests in his lap, holding an alms bowl, which signifies the simple, ascetic life of a Buddhist monk. The lotus throne traditionally represents purity and spiritual unfolding.

A Thangka for Your Home

Placed on a home altar or in a meditation space, this thangka can help create a dedicated sanctuary of stillness.
