Buddha Amitayus – Sangay Tsepakmey

Amitayus is worshipped in Tibetan Buddhism as the Buddha of boundless life. In Tibetan it is called Sangay Tsepakmey - སངས་རྒྱས་ཚེ་དཔག་མེད།. In the Vajrayana it is considered an appearance of Buddha Amitabha and is particularly associated with the practice of long-life.

Symbolism of the Amitayus statue

The vase in his hands stands for Amrita, the symbolic nectar of immortality. It embodies the desire for a long, meaningful life that offers space for spiritual development. The hands resting in the laps form the gesture of meditative collection. Crown and jewelry belong to the traditional enlightened manifestation of Amitayus. In Buddhism, the lotus seat is associated with purity and awakening.

Importance for meditation and everyday life

In the Buddhist tradition, the practice of Amitayus is associated with the desire to overcome obstacles to a long life and to use one's lifetime for wisdom and compassion. As a reference point for meditation or on a house altar, the character can remind us of mindfulness and the conscious handling of one's own time. As a gift, she expresses good wishes for the life of a loved one.

These spiritual meanings are based on Buddhist traditions. The possession of the statue guarantees neither an extension of life nor health effects.
