Chenrezig – Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism

Chenrezig is the Tibetan name for Avalokiteshvara (also spelled Avalokiteshwara). In Mahayana Buddhism, he embodies the boundless compassion of all Buddhas and the willingness to address the suffering of all sentient beings. His well-known mantra is *Om Mani Padme Hum*.

In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama is considered a manifestation of Chenrezig. This connection represents the ideal of embodying both wisdom and active compassion for the benefit of others.

Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

The four arms are traditionally associated with the "four immeasurable" states of mind: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. Two hands hold a jewel in front of the heart, while the other hands carry a string of prayer beads (*mala*) and a lotus blossom. The lotus symbolizes purity, and the prayer beads represent the continuous practice of reciting mantras.

Used as a focal point for meditation or as part of a home altar, this Thangka invites the conscious cultivation of compassion, patience, and mindfulness in daily life. In this tradition, the practice of Chenrezig is linked to the development of an open heart and inner peace. These are spiritual meanings, not guaranteed outcomes or promises of healing.
