Who is Vajrasattva, Dorje Sempa?

Vajrasattva, also written Vajra Sattva or Vajra Satva, is an important figure in Tibetan Buddhism. His Tibetan name Dorje Sempa is reproduced accordingly as "Vajra-Being" or "Diamond Being". In the Vajrayana tradition, it stands for the original purity of the mind and is especially associated with cleansing practices.

Traditional meaning and symbolism

In classical iconography, Vajrasattva is often depicted with a vajra and a bell. The Vajra stands for unwavering clarity and the compassionate method, the bell for wisdom. Together, these attributes recall the combination of wisdom and compassion. This explanation describes the traditional symbolism, not the verified image details of this individual Thangkas.
